Act Now to Save

David Lee Roberts’ Life

A severely mentally ill man could lose his life at the hands of the state of Alabama. Your actions can make a difference in David Lee Roberts’ fight for clemency.

David Lee Roberts’ severe mental illness has robbed him of the ability to advocate on his own behalf. We need you to be his voice. In addition to sending an email to Governor Ivey asking for clemency, there are several other ways you can help save David Lee’s life: send a personal note, make phone calls, share David’s story on social media, unite in prayer for everyone affected.

Send a personal note.

Contact your representatives and ask them to urge the Governor to do the right thing and grant David Lee Roberts clemency. You can find each of your representative’s contact information here. Here’s a sample email for you to copy & paste, or to help you get started.

Subject: Urge Governor Ivey to Grant David Lee Roberts Clemency

Dear Representative [Last Name],

I’m writing to you as a concerned Alabama resident who believes in justice, mercy, and the constitutional rights we all share.

David Lee Roberts was sentenced to death when a judge overrode the jury’s sentence of life without parole. While judicial override is no longer legal in Alabama, Mr. Roberts remains on death row because of it. That alone is troubling. Even more disturbing is that Mr. Roberts has been diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia and, by all accounts, does not comprehend what is happening to him.

Executing a severely mentally ill man under a sentencing method our state has since outlawed violates both our principles and, I believe, the protections of the Eighth Amendment against cruel and unusual punishment.

This isn’t about excusing crimes; it’s about ensuring our justice system remains fair, humane, and consistent with the values we claim to uphold.

I urge you to ask Governor Ivey to closely review Mr. Roberts’ case and mental health diagnosis and to consider clemency. This is a moment that calls for moral clarity and leadership, which is something Alabamians deeply need and respect in times like these.

Sincerely,
[Your Name]
[City, ZIP]
